Why We Don’t Accept Insurance for Counseling
At Freedom Path Counseling, we are committed to providing high-quality counseling that prioritizes your well-being, privacy, and personal growth. A common question we receive is why we don’t accept insurance for our services. While we understand that using insurance can make counseling more affordable in some cases, there are important ethical, personal, and practical reasons why we have chosen not to participate in insurance networks.
1. Protecting Your Privacy & Confidentiality
When you use insurance for counseling, your mental health records become part of your permanent medical history. Insurance companies require detailed information about your diagnosis and treatment in order to approve coverage. This means that deeply personal aspects of your mental health may be accessible to third parties, including future employers, insurance providers, and even government agencies in certain situations.
At Freedom Path Counseling, we believe that your healing journey should be confidential and protected, allowing you to seek help without concern about how it may affect you in the future.
2. Ethical Concerns with Mandatory Diagnoses
In order for insurance to cover counseling, a counseling must assign you a mental health diagnosis that justifies medical necessity. While some clients may meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health disorder, others may simply need support during a difficult season of life, guidance in relationships, or faith-based counseling to navigate personal challenges.
Assigning a diagnosis when it is not truly warranted raises ethical concerns, and for those who do receive a diagnosis, it can have long-term implications, including:
✔ Potential impact on future life insurance, disability claims, or security clearances
✔ Difficulty obtaining certain jobs that require background checks or medical records
✔ Stigmatization in medical or legal settings
By not accepting insurance, we are able to provide counseling based on what is best for you—not what is required by an insurance company.
3. Freedom to Focus on Faith-Based Counseling
Many insurance providers do not cover Christian counseling or faith-based counseling, as they consider it a spiritual service rather than a medical necessity. At Freedom Path Counseling, our approach is rooted in faith, grace, and biblical principles, allowing us to integrate Christian values into the counseling process without restrictions or limitations imposed by insurance companies.
When insurance dictates treatment, counselors are often required to follow specific clinical models that may not align with a client’s faith-based needs. By operating outside the constraints of insurance, we can focus on what truly brings healing and transformation—not just what meets the insurance company’s criteria for reimbursement.
4. No Insurance-Driven Limitations on Your Care
Insurance companies may restrict the length of sessions, the number of visits allowed, and the types of counseling services covered. This can result in clients being rushed through treatment or denied ongoing support when they still need it.
By not working with insurance, we can:
✔ Offer personalized care tailored to your unique needs
✔ Provide sessions of the appropriate length—not just what is covered
✔ Support you for as long as you need, without restrictions
5. Keeping Costs Transparent & Affordable
Many people assume that insurance makes counseling more affordable, but this isn’t always the case. High deductibles, co-pays, and uncovered services can make out-of-pocket costs unexpectedly high. By offering direct-pay services, we keep our pricing transparent, allowing you to invest in your mental and spiritual well-being without surprises or hidden fees.
Additionally, we are committed to making counseling as accessible as possible, offering sliding scale options and other financial arrangements when needed.
Invest in Your Healing Without Limitations
Your mental health and spiritual growth deserve to be prioritized without interference from insurance companies. At Freedom Path Counseling, we are committed to providing ethical, faith-based, and confidential counseling that puts your needs first.
